Spanish club within Eisenhower High School creates decorations to be able to celebrate for the Day of the Dead.

Sweet smell of treats fills the air, students build ofrendas, Poco Loco plays in the background, a relaxing day in a Spanish club to celebrate Day of the Dead.

“It’s a happy time when you remember all the memories of the loved ones, and family that passed away,” Carla Simone said.

On November 3, the Day of the Dead event was held in Mrs. Klesko’s classroom after school. Students built ofrendas, which are basically shrines to passed loved ones. In this case people chose to build ofrendas dedicated to celebrities. One part of the event was the tasty Spanish treats called sopapillas. These treats are covered in cinnamon and sugar and can be dipped in chocolate with powdered sugar added. Which students seemed to enjoy.

“We hope there’s gonna be a big turnout,” Simone said. “Last year we weren’t able to have this event because of COVID. Normally there’s a good turnout but our expectations are bigger.”

It’s great to see things returning to normal after the virus. Especially when events like these couldn’t be held before. And now we get to enjoy them once again.

“We think it’s very important in Mexican culture, it’s also kind of transcended to other countries. And we thought it was important to kind of bring this important holiday into the school,” Simone said.
