Signing off as a Sophomore

Walking into the room with her palms sweaty, a nervous 15 year old is asked the question that determines the course of the next six years.

“They offered me a softball scholarship when I was a sophomore, in January of 2016,” junior pitcher and first baseman Kiersten Korber said.

Korber started playing softball at 5 years old. Initially playing in parks with her dad, she  progressed into playing in recreational leagues. Korber’s chance to play travel softball for different teams around the United States made her valuable to many colleges— landing her the opportunity to commit to Oakland University (OU).

“I have had the chance to play all over the country: California, Colorado, Georgia, Florida, Missouri, New Jersey, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio and Michigan. There are many talented players out there,” Korber said.

Korber is competitive and loves good competition. When she travels with her team and sees other girls play, Korber finds motivation. She realizes how many girls compete to play at the collegiate level. She pushes to better herself in all aspects of the game.

“They asked me in person after a campus visit, but they gave me a couple of weeks to make the decision,” Korber said.

After visiting OU, the softball coaches invited Korber and her parents into their office. They offered her the chance to play for the team and gave her a couple weeks to think about it, soon to decide OU is the perfect fit for her. Additionally, Korber wants to major in education and believes OU is the best school to pursue her degree.

“I am super excited to play with my new team and learn more at Oakland after I graduate.”
