New sport coming to IKE

New sports team in development.

Junior Bella Vicari, has had one vision since the beginning of junior year, to start a girls lacrosse team. She’s wanted this sport so much that she has even gotten together with athletic director Kevin Donahue to gather  a group of girls.

“I started the lacrosse team because it’s a sport I really enjoy playing and I think other girls would like playing it too. I saw how Ike didn’t have a team and other surrounding schools did so I wanted to make a team!” Vicari said.

It’s something new that girl athletes can get involved in and be apart of. It will take a lot of work  to get it together, but the lacrosse board has been a big part in it.

“The lacrosse board has been very supportive and are willing to help the girls, the key is to get enough girls that will allow us to form a team,” Donahue said.

To form a team the athletic directors will have to look at the girls skill level and grades. Once there are enough girls committed, the directors will have to determine the varsity and JV team.

Some boys lacrosse players are willing to help the potential teams prepare for their seasons according to Tom Gjokaj, 11th grade.

To have clinics could be a good way get to know the girls team and help them, since they are starting a new team. They will get to see what the guys team does to get ready for the season.

“I think that the more kids play the more visible it is and the more kids it will attract, it’s like any other sport. You get that critical mass of kids that want to play and you build a tradition, and it helps to attract new players,” said Donahue.

The sport has the potential to attract many people, now girls can play on their own team, It will be a tradition.
