Newspaper, a class where the kids teach the class and the teacher edits in all her free time, a class that is slowing decreasing in students as the years go by.
“I am a junior in the newspaper class and I really hope that even after I graduate there will be a class. Not only did this class teach me how to write, but also how to talk to a lot of people by interviewing,” junior Justin Berryman said.
Students in the class take the whole entire month to get everything they can as perfect as possible and when they finally can pass it out, so much relief comes to them when they see the students reading it.
“A lot of people say that newspaper is stressful, and yes when deadline comes, it is. But I took newspaper as a sophomore and now that I’m a senior and the editor-in-chief of the newspaper, I do not regret for one minute taking newspaper. It showed me that what I really want to do when I’m older is journalism, if I didn’t take newspaper, I don’t think I ever would have realized that,” senior Bailey DeLaere said.
Once a month the newspaper gets sent home to all the students and parents of Ike, who read it. Besides making the newspaper, the students are expected to sell ads, write online stories and stories for the newspaper, interview students and faculty members, take pictures and design their own story.
“I graduated high school two years ago and took newspaper all three years that I was at Ike. If it wasn’t for newspaper, I wouldn’t of realized that I wanted to become a graphic design major,” alumnae Hayley Himanek said. “The work in newspaper is almost nothing compared to college, but it did prepare me for a whole lot of work.”
