Debunking study tips
Students try anything to help them to study—Chew gum while taking a test or study just before going to bed.
Study tip #1:Chewing gum while studying helps students concentrate.
Fact: Chewing gum can help during a test because the chewing motion activates and moves around the brain’s hippocampus, the memory part. There could be a slight relationship between the two, but not a giant one, according to psychology teacher Lisa Hallam said.
Study tip #2: Study before bed, because it is the last thing remembered.
Fact: Sleeping does help. You need sleep otherwise whatever you just studied isn’t necessarily going to work, according to Hallam.
Study tip #3: Study for a little bit, then take breaks.
Fact: Taking breaks are necessary. When taking breaks, you should do physical activities, such as walking or jogging. These are proven to help the brain, according to Hallam.
Study tip #4: Smiling helps perform do better.
Fact: It’s a body and mind connection. Physical change can change emotions, smiling makes people happy and in a more positive mood. This results in doing better on tests, according to Hallam.
Study tip #5: Drinking coffee energizes the brain.
Myth: Coffee isn’t necessarily going to energize the brain. Staying hydrated yes, but not with coffee. Coffee is going to give a brief stimulation, but you can also crash after. It’s not a study aid by any means, according to Hallam.
