Concerns from national medical associations, including the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), link high schools’ early start times to teenage sleep deprivation.

“Even if school was pushed back just an hour or so, I think I would be able to concentrate more, especially in the earlier hours,” junior Ellsa Moczulski said. “I would actually be awake.”

While it’s recommended to log eight or more hours of sleep during school nights, only 20 percent of 12-18 year olds studied in a 2011 Drexel University study actually did; the rest acquired less than eight hours. Most students average around six hours of sleep on weeknights.

Sleep alternatives such as napping, sleeping later on weekends and consuming caffeine temporarily restore energy, but aren’t nearly as beneficial as a good night’s sleep, according to the AAP.
