Diet Fads: Fiction or Fact?

South Beach Diet

Fiction: “This diet will make me lose weight in two weeks faster than sticking to the food I eat on a normal day basis and going to the gym.”

Fact: Despite what it’s known for, the South Beach Diet is not a low-carb diet. “The diet is more based on eating allowed foods until you are completely full, rather than sticking to a stringent meal size,” Dr. Susan Bellefluer said. “Eventually, it’s reputation states that you can eat anything in moderation and still be on the diet.”

7 day juice cleanse

Fiction: “Juice cleanses can make people lose weight faster than normal diets and is better than working out.”

Fact: Juicing helps unleash the natural healing power of the body, according to Dr. Joel Fuhrman, author of “The Super Immunity Diet.” Users must drink five juices a day: a breakfast juice, mid-morning juice, lunch juice, afternoon snack juice and a dinner juice. This cleanse removes toxins, some weight will be lost, but very easily put back on without staying active for 30-60 minutes a day. It is highly recommended anyone under 21 not do the juice cleanse, because it’s unhealthy to the growing processes, Fuhrman said.

Nutrisystem

Fiction: “Nutrisystem is less expensive than most popular fad diets and celebrities use it, so it must be good to lose weight fast.”

Fact: The weight loss with Nutrisystem will be slow and gradual, results will show after two to three weeks and users lose around three to four pounds. The Nutrisystem diet costs around $300 a month, including all ingredients and snacks. “This is a simple plan with all the hard work taken out,” Bellefluer said. “But the weight will be lost slowly, so if you need a faster amount of weight loss this may not be the system for you.”
