Directing the actors, theater director Eric Wells assists the cast with learning their lines. “It’s a fun show. I’m just looking forward to the reactions of the audience to all the quirky characters,” Wells said. They rehearsed “Mamma Mia,” which premiers on March 4

With spirits high, students prepare to put on the production of “Mamma Mia.”
“I love being able to see it all come together and just being able to just have a good time, especially since we’ve been gone for so long,” drama teacher and theater director Eric Wells said. “The pandemic has taken away a lot from everyone, so I’m glad I’m able to give you something back.”
The debut of “Mamma Mia” will be the first show back on the school stage after three years. In 2019, the performance of “West Side Story” was the last show performed before Covid-19. Now that schools are back open and restrictions loosened, extra curricular performances are back in full swing.
“I’m feeling very excited to have all of our dancing and singing memorized, so we can start putting it all together and making it a real performance,” sophomore Kevin Ago said.
Many of the school’s best performers log hours of work inside and outside of school to put on a show-stopping performance. Both the vocal and drama performing arts programs welcomed auditions in November for the musical and are immersed in rehearsal and set building to create the show.
“I auditioned for Donna and I’m looking forward to being able to perform with everyone, especially singing a duet with (senior) Conde Gonzalez who plays Harry,” senior Gianna Valenti said.
While the audience sees the actors on stage, there are multiple hours of work that go on behind the scenes. It takes a whole backstage crew to put on a production, with members adjusting lighting and controlling sound throughout the show, along with make-up and costuming.
“I’m glad we’re able to get back into the play, especially since I haven’t been able to enjoy painting all the props we make,” senior Maria Dunn said, “but I’m really excited to make all the props for this ‘Mamma Mia’ play. I know it’s going to be a lot of work, but it’ll be worth it.”
The production will take place in the P.A.C with the first two shows on March 4 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. and a third show at 7 p.m. on March 5. Tickets are now available to be purchased online at showtix4u.com.
“I can’t wait till we are all settled in our costumes and getting ready to perform,” junior Mackenzie Ludwig said. “I hope everyone will be able to really appreciate the art of theater.”
