Lined up in rows, the big, red bags are filled with many gifts that are ready to be wrapped by the volunteers.

Friends of Foster kids asks for help. They are a non-profit organization that believes it is a season for granting a child’s wish which speaks softly of unconditional love from people who care.

Friends of Foster kids was founded in Macomb, Michigan. This organization provides a “Christmas” for foster children in Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties who have been removed from their homes due to abuse and neglect and placed in temporary housing or shelters.

Starting on November 27 at 10 a.m, volunteers can come into the organization to wrap gifts that people bought for the foster children.

This organization changed due to COVID-19. Instead of volunteers just walking in, they have to sign up on the Friends of Foster kids website at Friends of Foster Kids Volunteers: 2021 Spirit of Christmas – Volunteers (signupgenius.com). Also, they are ensuring everyone’s safety by having plex-glass shields, masks being mandatory while within the building, new capacity guidelines and sanitizing between shifts.

The tasks volunteers can sign up for on the website are screener, bag mover, gift wrapper, greeter and data entry, label makers, workshop organizers or wrap captain assistants.

The work for these tasks are simple: as a screener, you greet, screen and take temperatures of volunteers at the entry door. When placed as a bag mover, you move and organize bags throughout the building. As a gift wrapper, you wrap the gifts within the assigned bags. A greeter and data entry volunteer greets guests and helps with donations. Label makers print gift labels for wrapped gifts. Workshop organizers keep the workshop organized and tidy. Lastly, a wrap captain assistant instructs and oversees volunteer wrappers and assists cleaning areas between shifts

“The organization was nice,” senior Jacob Sandvig said. “It seemed like everyone was super dedicated to helping make the kids’ Christmas better. I liked it and liked how much they are doing for kids.”

If unable to spare the amount of time it takes to wrap gifts, the organization is also asking help with getting supplies. They are greatly in need of wrapping paper, tape, bows, ribbon, anything used to wrap gifts. So, with being able to give at least one of those supplies, that would help the organization tremendously.
