Construction stalls students

Local roadwork results in increased tardiness

As construction on 25 Mile Road ended, students encountered another detour with 24 Mile Road being shut down, adding to the multiple construction sites around the city.

“With everything being shut down, it takes me even longer to get home,” junior Amanda Horton said. “It’s a hassle to get anywhere on time.”

After months of construction, 25 Mile Road reopened in mid-October, relieving congested traffic in front of the school. 25 Mile Road had closed shortly after the end of the previous school year in June and was under construction for nearly four months.

“During the summer, certain administrators still have to come to the school,” Administrative assistant to counseling Danielle Gibbs said. “When 25 was closed, it was a big hassle to get through the construction, and now that it’s opened it’s easier for everyone.”

The detours surrounding the school  causes attendance issues for  many students and buses being late, according to Gibbs. With the winter weather upon Michigan, roads will worsen and more tardiness is expected.

Many roads are riddled with potholes and cracking roads. The weather is thought to be a contributing factor as well, according to Macomb County Project Engineer Jim Arbrustur.

“The construction being done on 24 Mile road isn’t a county project,” Arbrustur said. “It’s through the Detroit Water and Sewage department. They are going section by section putting in the new water main.”

Other factors have also contributed to road construction. Road fixes on Hayes are beginning in order to correct the size changes throughout the road. It is expected to be completely reopened fall of next year; as the repairs are extensive, according to Arbrustur.

New initiatives brought before Michigan legislature could add to road detours. Voters will vote on a sales tax increase from six to seven percent next May. If passed, more roads and bridges are slotted to be fixed.

“I know there are plans of going mile by mile and redoing the roads around here,” Horton said. “It’s inconvenient and it will just make people late.”

Construction will continue as roads are fixed mile by mile along 24 Mile Road. The construction will move between Romeo Plank to Dequindre, and with Michigan having the 5th worst ranking interstate highways  and roads, more construction is expected throughout the area.

“It’s our job as administrators to stay up to date on the construction,” Gibbs said.  “Whenever there is major construction, we really look forward to the end date.”
