Claiming the regional crown, Varsity hockey beat Romeo 2-0 on Wednesday, Feb. 26, slating their spot in the state quarterfinals.
“It felt amazing knowing we were going to states this year. It’s been something I have always wanted to be a part of ever since I have played on Eisenhower hockey,” team captain senior Jacob Blanzy said.
Due to strong goalies on both sides of the ice, the team didn’t score the first goal until the third period. Then with one minute left in the game, they scored an empty net goal which sealed their win.
“Overall, the game was a battle, both goalies played phenomenal, so I could say scoring was a challenge. I was definitely a little nervous, but I never doubted our team’s ability to come out on top,” forward left-wing junior Sawyer Hotchkiss said.
Currently, they are one of only eight teams left standing in the Division 1 state playoffs.
“We have a great group of kids on this team that are unselfish and work hard for one another. They were all willing to do the little things it takes to win,” head coach David Erwin said.
Heading into state quarterfinals, the team feels their practice and dedication throughout the season has prepared them for the upcoming game, according to Blanzy. The last time they won their region and advanced to states was in 2016, so they hope this is the year they achieve that success again.
“I don’t think there is anything more to work on, and that the only thing that will decide our success in states is our discipline and confidence going forward,” Hotchkiss said.
The team will compete against Detroit Catholic Central, who are currently ranked first in the state, Saturday, March. 1 at 4:30 at Suburban Ice Macomb.
“The team is ready for the upcoming game,” Blanzy said. “We know it’s going to be tough competition, but this is what we’ve been working for all year.”
