Eisenhower goes evergreen

Thanks to Eisenhower’s Environmental Club, the school has once again been awarded “evergreen” school status but that is not the one thing the school has won this year.

“Getting this status shows our commitment to our community, earth and future generations,” Environmental Club Adviser Brygida Deriemaker said.

For the fourth year now, Eisenhower has been considered “evergreen” after being awarded points earned by different green initiatives started by Environmental Club. Schools considered “green” earn 10-14 points, schools considered “emerald” earn 15-19 and schools considered “evergreen” must receive a minimum of 20 points.

“Its really nice that all the work we put into making these initiatives happen are awarded and recognized,” senior Environmental Club Secretary Alissa August said.

Being an “evergreen” school is not the only recognition Eisenhower received this year. Students from each school present are eligible to submit possible logos for the Macomb County Green Schools to use in the following year.  Over 20 students’ works were submitted by Eisenhower and sophomore Olivia Metty’s design was chosen to be the logo for the 2014-2015 school year.

“We hope to continue our status by trying to keep up with what we already do,” Deriemaker said. “We would also like to expand into areas we haven’t explored yet.”
