One day junior Jessica Korte walks through the deserts of Egypt, hearing the gunfire of the revolution, the next day she hits the asphalt of Shelby Township, unable to return home.

“The first time we were evacuated it was really scary. There was gunfire at night, there were tanks in the street and there were riots outside of our apartment, so it was really traumatizing,” Korte said.

Every school year, she moves her life to Egypt and returns to Michigan for summer vacation because of her dad’s job. Due to the Egyptian revolution that started in 2011, Korte and her family were unable to go back.

“It’s really stressful moving back and forth, but it has been my lifestyle for a long time,” Korte said. “Having friends on both sides of the pond really helps me to deal with the moves.”

Korte started her school year in Michigan, but her family may be moving back to Egypt at the end of the semester. For now, Korte adjusts to her classes this year and works on making friends, enjoying the time she may have left.

“Making friends is kind of difficult, since I never know how long we will actually be able to see each other, but it’s nice to get to know so many people,” Korte said.

Korte and her family moved to Egypt and back to Michigan six times since Korte was in Kindergarten. Her dad’s job requires him to move from Michigan, the base plant’s location, to Egypt, one of the businesses main branches.

“I wanted to take the job so that I would be able to experience new cultures and become a better person,” father Mark Korte said. “Work can be tiring and I most look forward to coming home at the end of the day and travelling with my family.”

While Korte’s dad continues to work whenever they move, Korte’s stay-at-home mom works to make sure everyone is adjusting properly.

“Since I moved around a lot before I was married, my imagination of fun always occupies my mind. I make sure that there is always something fun, scheduled for the girls to do whenever we move,” mother Gemma Korte said. “I go online and look for appropriate activities to occupy each others time and we also have family here that helps us a lot.”

As a result of the moving they have been doing, the Korte family has grown stronger with each move.

“I just have to keep in mind that home is where friends and family are,” Korte said. “Then I know that everything will be okay eventually.”
