The true importance of voting: Election Day 2019

The reason voting is paramount to this age

As the 2019 Election Day comes to an end, Nov. 5 is a day where certain townships vote on important proposals geared towards their area. “If we have a generation that disengages, you’re allowing other people to make decisions for you,” principal Jared McEvoy said. Not too many students went and voted.

As the 2019 Election Day comes to an end, Nov. 5 is a day where certain townships vote on important proposals geared towards their area. “If we have a generation that disengages, you’re allowing other people to make decisions for you,” principal Jared McEvoy said. Not too many students went and voted.

As a registered voter, Nov. 5 isn’t just another day off school, but a day where you get to make decisions to impact your community.

“I think it’s important to get involved in politics or at least know what’s going on because you have to keep an eye on the people in power and make sure that you know what they’re doing and they’re not getting away with anything,” AP Government teacher David Drath said.

People vote to say if they want or don’t want a certain ballot proposal. Since voters belong to the township or community, voting happens to be an important part of areas to say what’s desired.

“If you ever want to be able to truly make change, you have to be part of the process. If you have concerns about something you’ve got to be part of the solution. In terms of getting out there, making sure you’re registered to vote and then actually getting to the polls to participate,” principal Jared McEvoy said.

People about the age of 18-21 set the future. Obtaining the power to make a change and difference produces a large part of the outcome. About seven million teens will turn 18 by November 2020, according to the New York Times.

“Voting gives an equal opportunity to people,” senior Isha Dwivedi said. “I plan on voting in the presidential election when I’m old enough because it is important.”
