Spreading awareness through silence
While most students become chatty and squirrelly as the weekend approaches, a handful will not say a word on Fri. April 15, in honor of the Day of Silence.
“I’m doing it just for support. I’ve never had any problems with being messed with, but I see all the people in our club and the fears they have about people hurting them,” senior Stephanie Humphries said.
The Day of Silence is a student-led national event and was created by the Gay, lesbian and straight education network (GLSEN) to spread awareness of anti-LGBT name calling, bullying and harassment in school. Students from middle school to college participate in this movement by vowing to keep silent in order to make other students aware of anti-LGBT problems.
“It has opened my eyes,” Humphries said. “I just wanted to participate to spread awareness for all those who can’t speak up and and show how one voice, or more like no voice, can open people’s eyes to issues we tend to overlook.”
