A student brought a folding knife to school on Thursday, Oct. 26, which prompted a school-wide lockdown during 5th hour.
“Out of an abundance of caution, we implemented a brief lockdown as we addressed the situation. At no time was anyone threatened and no one was injured. We are continuing our investigation with Shelby Township Police and the situation will be addressed in accordance with our district’s code of conduct,” according to Principal Brandon Manzella’s email shared with students and parents.
Police responded to the issue while students and staff were directed to stay in their classrooms. The sophomore student was identified and detained. Rumors of a gun were put to rest when Manzella made an overhead announcement that the individual possessed a folding knife.
Manzella thanked everyone after everything calmed down for a smooth lockdown and the students who brought the topic to his attention. Faculty and students were then transferred from a lockdown to a hold, keeping students in their classes to continue for the remainder of 5th hour.
“He [Manzella] took the right steps,” sophomore Marina Mysliu said. “Everybody was already taking precautions before anything happened, so it was comforting knowing that everything got taken care of.”
