People struggle with lack of confidence

Only 5 percent of women are totally confident in themselves and 10 percent of men are confident in their bodies, according to the Dove Global Study and notgoodenough.com.

“The chase for perfection, our surroundings and social media are the key factors, I think, affecting the body confidence of others. The idea of a perfect body, to people, is a very thin image that can be pretty unattainable for some people,” Jones-Lau said. “It’s a human thing to be very critical of ourselves, but it puts a lot of people’s self-confidence on the line as well.”

The reflections women and men see in the mirror cause insecurities and make people feel less of themselves. About 95 percent of men and women think about their body shape every day, according to the Dove Global Study. About 98 percent of men and women struggle with gaining confidence and feel immense pressure on them most of the time, according to harvard.edu.

“Being a boy in high school, I see all my friends and peers bulking up and being buff,” sophomore Corey Shafer said. “It can be a little intimidating, because I’m not buff compared to some of the other boys in school. Not being as buff and having such an introvert personality can feel a little threatening sometimes.”

Many teens struggle to gain confidence. When people lack confidence, whether in their body or personal life, it puts a dent in how others view them and how they view themselves, according to psychologistanywhere.com.

“I feel sorrow and pain, like the person in the mirror is my opposite,” junior Ella Selman said. “Everything about it is horrid. That’s how I view my reflection.”

Lack of confidence can be detected by others; and can affect the way people perceive a person, limiting their success. When one doesn’t succeed, it can cause a low in confidence, according to the Harvard Business Review.

“I am a very closed off person. Teachers don’t even know my name sometimes, because I’m so quiet,” Shafer said. “I feel it limits my success compared to the outgoing people in class who have good relationships with the teacher, because the teacher focuses a great deal on the people who go out of their way to be friendly with the teachers. I feel it can decrease my confidence levels.”

While school pressures, like social media and home environments put peoples’ self-confidence on the line, there are some ways to help with confidence.

“Ever since I decided to start working out, I have felt more energized and refreshed. My state of mind has improved greatly,” sophomore Amanda Dowdican said. “I feel more confident and it’s a method to calm my nerves each and every day.”

Though many people lack confidence, they can try changing that. About 70 percent of Americans who make the effort to change their bodies see improvement. Their self-esteem goes up and they feel good in their own skin, according to the Dove self-esteem fund.

“If it’s at a place where it is affecting your life, then I would recommend therapy. If it’s just an everyday thing, I would recommend just looking at yourself and motivating yourself,” school counselor Dr. Julia Jones-Lau said. “Start to try and talk to yourself differently. Take the negatives about your appearance and try to turn it into a positive.”
