Macomb Unified skaters glide with pride as their program continues to grow in its second year.
“I believe that growth comes over time and comes from the leaders of each activity building relationships with the kids in the program,” athletic director Kevin Donahue said. “The growth of this skating team could not be done without the drive of passion the students had, which impacted students getting involved.”

Eager students and parents wanted to form a skating team and freshman volleyball coach, Connie Wakefield, took charge to launch the program last year. The team is made up of students from other Macomb county schools, such as: Dakota, Stevenson, and Henry Ford II.

“It is great to meet new girls who love the unique sport you love. It has created a close knit group of friends for me that I enjoy being around,” senior co-captain Brianna Vono said.

Students can join the team by becoming a registered United States Figure Skater member (USFS), being a part of a skating academy and attending a high school in Macomb County. If interested, students are encouraged to contact coaches Renee Holfelder and Heather LaFever at [email protected].

The growth of the team created benefits, like having grown closer.

“You usually don’t have anyone out on the ice with you. It’s just you, the ice and your skates,” Vono said. “With this team, I have my teammates with me, who cheer me on, as we all support each other.”
