“Fearless” by Lauren Roberts is an emotional rollercoaster filled with jaw-dropping twists and electric tension made to wreck its readers.
As the final installment of the “Powerless” series, aside from an upcoming novella, “Fearless” gives readers the ending they’ve been waiting for. It takes place in Illya, a kingdom filled with magical beings called Elites and mundanes without powers called Ordinaries.
In this finale, the Ordinary main character Paedyn Gray is forced into an engagement with the Elite king in hopes of uniting the Elites and Ordinaries. But her heart lies with the king’s brother, Kai Azer, her former enemy and now the love of her life.
Roberts is known for her poetic writing and bantering main characters. But “Fearless” took those skills to another level. Nearly every word from Kai is either a punch to the gut or tugging at readers’ heart strings.
It was also heartwarming to see Paedyn and Kai’s character growth come together in this book. Paedyn gains a newfound confidence. Meanwhile, Kai heals from past traumas. Both characters are like puzzle pieces that perfectly fit together, which makes their forbidden romance all the more heart-wrenching.
While Roberts’ dynamic characters steal the show, the worldbuilding is lacking. Each book introduced new aspects of the world but never went too far into detail. The romance between Kai and Paedyn also occasionally overshadowed the struggles the world was facing.
Another downside was the rushed ending. Her last plot twists took readers by surprise, but not in an enjoyable way. One of which wasn’t needed and then quickly brushed under the rug. However, the last chapter was touching and long-awaited.
Roberts did a fantastic job for a debut series. Her writing skills are undeniable and the characters she crafts always steal readers’ hearts. Roberts confirmed she plans on continuing books set in these kingdoms, which no doubt will also take the world by storm.
