“My brothers and dad have food allergies so I was always sad when they couldn’t have desserts. I created different recipes that they could have and enjoyed. I had found a passion for it along the way,” senior entrepreneur Sophia Matheson said.
From a young age and with a little help from her mom– who she had always baked with– Matheson found her affinity for baking and food. At the age of 13, Matheson started her cookie business.
“I plan on becoming a food chemist, I love being in the kitchen so I can see myself always baking,” Matheson said.
Through trial and error, Matheson curated a recipe that stood out to family members and friends around her to take her business to the next level. From the advice of her family throughout the process, it took months to perfect it.
“I learned that it [running a business] takes a lot of hard work, but it is super gratifying to see the results and happy customers,” Matheson said.
With her business at her disposal, Matheson also uses her cookies to reach others in faraway places, helping those in need.
“I recently collaborated with a group to raise money for the hurricane victims. I sold 35 dozen chocolate chip cookies and donated 100% of what I received,” Matheson said.
Even while keeping her business afloat Matheson maintains an exemplary presence in school and sports as well. To achieve a balance, Matheson utilizes a planner to support each of her endeavors so each gets enough attention.
“She enjoys what she does and truly pours her heart into it. She has been known to take the time to make customers sample cookies, just to make sure their vision comes to life. That does not just come from “getting the job done.” It comes from loving what you do and caring about the customers – it comes from being passionate. Passion is what keeps her customers returning time and time again, and keeps her calendar full,” family friend and customer Lisa Rietsch said.
With it being her last year of high school, however, Matheson will close down shop once she goes to college. While So Super Sweet is still running, Matheson regularly posts orders to her Instagram and Facebook, called Sosupersweet, where customers can also order her cookies.
“My business would not be what it is today without my family and friends, Matheson said.” They were the ones who gave me the opportunity to practice orders.”
