Bringing her love for “Game of Thrones” and giraffes to the school, English 12 and AVID 10 teacher, April Stockton, feels welcomed and ready for the upcoming school year.
“All of the staff was super welcoming and very, very helpful. [Associate principal] Mrs. [Kate] Walker was extremely positive in welcoming and having me here,” Stockton said. “It was nice to see her enthusiasm for the school and her love for Eisenhower, and the students so far have been pretty welcoming as well.”
This Texas-born teacher taught everything from elementary school to high school, with a majority of her career teaching at Heritage Junior High before moving to the school.
“When they closed Heritage to have a full I.B. (International Baccalaureate) building, all of the teachers had to go somewhere and I really wanted to try high school. There was a position opening and I was like, ‘all right,” Stockton said.
When not teaching, she enjoys attending her kids’ sporting events, country line dancing and reading. Some of her other favorite things include: the Christmas film “Love Actually” and the television series “Game of Thrones.”
“I love to read and I am in a book club,” Stockton said. “[One of my favorite books is] “Verity” by Colleen Hoover.”
In the classroom, Stockton prides herself on always remaining patient and flexible with her students. She understands the importance of a teacher who hears her students and loves this aspect of her job.
“My favorite part about teaching is probably making connections with the students and seeing a lesson go really well. It makes me feel proud and good about what I do,” Stockton said.
Stockton’s students are ready to learn more about the newest teacher occupying room 120.
“My initial impression is that she was very nice and bubbly,” senior Elmarisa Hayden said. “I am looking forward to writing college level essays in her class this school year.”
