Job Seeking Skills, Medical Reading, Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant, Creative Problem Solving, Medical Innovation, Human Growth & Development Test and Health Education are the categories Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) members compete in the State Leadership Conference.
“This [program] can help me a lot with finding a medical job,” junior Alexander Madhloom said. “In the future, helping during the summer, [so that,] I can get a position at Beaumont.”
At the HOSA regionals event which occurred on Saturday, Jan. 20, a total of 12 students in eight different categories qualified for the State Leadership Conference. Until April 18-19, when the State Leadership Conference occurs, students prepare by reading, collaborating and practicing the material.
“It’s really important to study starting far ahead in advance,” senior Chelsea Pankiewicz said. “Just to make sure that you can place and do your best.”
In preparation for states, students have an abundance to study. Solo competitors have to practice their material which comes with their category. While group competitors present their new ideas to the judges. For this year, these categories involve Creative Problem Solving and Medical Innovation that are created pre-competition.
All categories pose their own set of challenges and material. Some have a presentation; some take tests or essays and many other forms of testing their skills ranging from getting interviewed for a job or performing CPR.
“I hope they all at least get to place,” advisor Jill Bologna said. “I would love it if they’d all place in the top five, I don’t see any reason why they can’t.”
