Security cameras enforce school safety

There are over 100 cameras around the school, all monitored for the safety of students, which can take pictures or video at the command of the administration.

“The cameras can take a picture or video clip whenever we need it to and we use it anytime it’s necessary,” Security Specialist Jerry Griesbeck said. “Most of the time it’s a theft or security problem.”

If Griesbeck needs to identify someone, the first step is to ask the associate principals if they know who might be in the picture or video. The person is then found and interviewed and given the chance to create a written statement if necessary. If the person can not be identified by the associates, an email with the picture or video is sent out to the entire staff.

“I’ve been sent a couple pictures this year and they are usually related to a security problem,” science teacher Nancy Nichols said. “It definitely makes everything safer for everyone.”

It’s crucial that security finds the person they need before the school day is over to make sure they can locate any evidence that is needed, according to Griesbeck.

“I like the cameras,” sophomore Vanessa Krstevski said, “they definitely make me feel safe in school.”
