Varsity Football hosts homecoming game against Romeo Bulldogs

Senior Lilly Smiscik beams as homecoming queen with homecoming king senior Connor Jones. “Being able to be homecoming queen and my boyfriend being homecoming king is a dream come true,” Smiscik said. “I’m so overwhelmed and excited.” After she was announced queen, the Varsity Dance members ran on the field to congratulate her.

The Varsity Football team hosted the Romeo Bulldogs in a MAC Red conference game at Swinehart field on Oct 11, providing a win and homecoming festivities for the spectators and students.

“I was so nervous for playing at my first homecoming game, but my team pumped me up and it ended up to be a great game for me,” junior wide receiver Nick Ribbing said.

The team took advantage of the turnover at the start of the game, when senior kicker Eric Dulinski jolted a 35 yard field goal to put them on the board, 3-0. In the second quarter, the team responded with two unanswered touchdowns from senior quarterback Dan Chmielewski to Ribbing.  Eagles led the bulldogs 16-7 at the end of the first half.

Halftime highlighted the dance, cheer and band performances, as well as the crowning of homecoming queen, senior Lilly Smiscik. She joined senior Connor Jones, who was crowned king previously at the pep assembly.

“It was so surprising and exciting to be homecoming king with Lilly as queen, because we’ve been dating our whole high school experience,” Jones said.

The third quarter went on to be a defensive battle. The teams traded possessions until the Bulldogs sustained a long drive that ended with a touchdown pass, which tightened the score to 16-14 and finished the game.

“It’s awesome to win a big game like this,” junior linebacker Jake Fredal said. “One game closer to making the playoffs.”
